DIYリフォームパート6 - 恐怖のDIYの始まり!/ DIY Renovation Part 6 - Let the horror of DIY begin!
1. Remove the eaves.
The mortar houses in the Showa era seems to be made very simple. They just craft a wooden frame and smear mortar over the structure. I feel it has something to do with Haiku.
2. Tear off the mortar from the 1st-floor wall structure. Of course, its easier said than done.
The photos make it look easy, but basically, you have like a boulder stuck on to your wall so it's heavy, dangerous and quite exhausting. There might be some people who read this blog and figured it was a good idea to do their own walls, but please consider that you have been warned. You can't throw just throw the stuff away either.
So here is what it looks like after the 1F exterior mortar is removed. The orange bag there is what is called a "garabukuro" which is a garbage bag for construction materials here in Japan. Basically, you need to call an industrial waste processor or load your pick up truck and take it to them yourself. You might question the structural soundness of this house, but it actually survived the 311 like a boss.
We will replace the door and the window then re-apply the mortar after this, but I was astonished to find out that although exhausting, the taking down of the mortar was rather the easier part of the steps. And we even called friends to help out not knowing the level of trouble. I didn't know! Honestly! (I sincerely thank you guys for the help!)
