DIY とは何であるかという定義の話になると国によって意見の違いが出てくると思います。某古い一軒家を大分以前からリフォームしているのですが、日本ではどうやらDIYを標榜するには若干苦しいようです。

DIY Renovation

I believe in defining the word DIY, there will be some differences of opinion among Nations. We've been renovating this old house from a while ago, but in Japan, it seems to be a bit over the edge of the said term.

この作業を始めたときは公開を予定していなかったので外観を詳しく撮った写真が無いのですが、これだけでもそれなりに古い家だというのが分かると思います。80年代臭がしますが、その時期に改修されただけで、戦前の建築ではという疑いがあります。少なくとも戦後であればまだ戦後まもなくであることは近所の方からの情報から間違いないといえます。

各々の施工に関してはそれなりに写真がありますので、こちらで少しずつ紹介していきたいと思います。

Since there was no plan of presenting the project to the public, there aren't many photos of the exterior of the build, but as you can see, it is fairly an old one. There is a smell of the '80s in the style, but that's only because it was renovated at that time and it is suspected that the construction was done before the war. We know for sure that if it was after, it should be quite early after the war by what the neighbors have told us.

For each work, there are considerable amounts of photos, so I would like to introduce them here in bits. 

内々の事情でしばらくテナントとして貸し出していたのですが、借り手は居酒屋的な飲食店さんでしたので看板が残っています。引き渡しの際には外して頂きました。個人で家を建築する文化がある欧米などでは割と普通かもしれませんが、日本では個人で行うにはちょっとした規模の改装になりす。この記事の掲載時では現在進行形です。個人的には東京オリンピックまでに終わらないのではと思っています。

建物はツーバイフォーなどとハイカラな物ではなく、古き良き木造軸組工法です。そういう意味では外国人の方にも興味深い記事かもしれません。

For internal reasons, the house has had been rented to an "izakaya" type of restaurant, so you can see the signs there. This was removed by the time the tenant handed over the property. It might not be anything surprising for western countries with a culture to build their own houses, but in Japan, the renovation done should be considered to be a bit of a grand scale. At the time of writing this article, the renovation is ongoing. My personal opinion is that it might not finish before the Tokyo Olympics.

The build itself is not anything fancy like a 2 by 4 construction but was built by the traditional wooden shaft assembly method. So this might be rather interesting for people oversea as well.
